Focal Myositis in paediatric age.
BACKGROUND: Focal Myositis is a rare pseudotumor of unknown aetiology that is often difficult to diagnose and treat. Typically afflicting people in adulthood, it has occasionally been reported also among children.
PURPOSE: the aim of this study is to review the literature of Focal Myositis in paediatric age in order to compare the clinical manifestation and the various treatment suggested by different authors.
METHODS: this article describes a 6-year-old boy with focal myositis in gracilis muscle successfully treated by conservative methods, including nocturnal leg traction, intensive physiokinesi therapy and articulated knee orthosis guided to progressive extension. Furthermore a systematic review of literature concerning focal myositis in paediatric age is reported.
CONCLUSION: our case and the review of literature suggests that conservative methods should be the first-choice treatment for FM in paediatric age and that surgery should be strictly reserved for selected cases where non-invasive methods have previously faile
Re-Viewing the Mass Communication Education Curriculum. Case for Language/Linguistics, Communication Synergy.
Curriculum review of any academic curriculum is one way of demonstrating the dynamism of such discipline. Mass Communication as a dynamic discipline is one such beneficiary of curriculum review. In line with Iwuchukwu’s (2010) earlier submission that no graduate of any academic level or discipline worth’s more than the curriculum that produces him/her, it was an observed inability of some practicing journalists, especially, those in the print. To handle ethical issues, which was traced to a lacuna in the curriculum that led to the introduction of the course, ethics. This paper seeks to unveil another obvious lapse among mass communication practitioners cutting across, print, broadcast and electronic media. It further highlights that such lapses as incompetence in language use, both at the phonetic, phonological semantic. Syntactic stylistic and even psycholinguistic to be a direct fall out of a perceived lacuna in the present mass communication education curriculum especially in Nigeria. We contend that a review of the present curriculum is glaringly imperative recommending not only the inclusion of more language/linguistic courses but also a stronger synergy between language/linguistics and mass communication. This is our opinion could be boosted with a course "Language and Communication not only though to all mass communication students at all levels, but it being recognized as another Sub-field of specialization by mass communication graduates who wish to further their stadium at the postgraduates levels as in the case in the University of Calabar
Optical properties of carbon grains: Influence on dynamical models of AGB stars
For amorphous carbon several laboratory extinction data are available, which
show quite a wide range of differences due to the structural complexity of this
material. We have calculated self-consistent dynamic models of circumstellar
dust-shells around carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars, based on a number
of these data sets. The structure and the wind properties of the dynamical
models are directly influenced by the different types of amorphous carbon. In
our test models the mass loss is not severely dependent on the difference in
the optical properties of the dust, but the influence on the degree of
condensation and the final outflow velocity is considerable. Furthermore, the
spectral energy distributions and colours resulting from the different data
show a much wider spread than the variations within the models due to the
variability of the star. Silicon carbide was also considered in the radiative
transfer calculations to test its influence on the spectral energy

Sequential multi-photon strategy for semiconductor-based terahertz detectors
A semiconductor-based terahertz-detector strategy, exploiting a
bound-to-bound-to-continuum architecture, is presented and investigated. In
particular, a ladder of equidistant energy levels is employed, whose step is
tuned to the desired detection frequency and allows for sequential multi-photon
absorption. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed
multi-subband scheme could represent a promising alternative to conventional
quantum-well infrared photodetectors in the terahertz spectral region.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physic
Terahertz detection schemes based on sequential multi-photon absorption
We present modeling and simulation of prototypical multi bound state quantum
well infrared photodetectors and show that such a detection design may overcome
the problems arising when the operation frequency is pushed down into the far
infrared spectral region. In particular, after a simplified analysis on a
parabolic-potential design, we propose a fully three-dimensional model based on
a finite difference solution of the Boltzmann transport equation for realistic
potential profiles. The performances of the proposed simulated devices are
encouraging and support the idea that such design strategy may face the

A kpc-scale X-ray jet in the BL Lac source S5 2007+777
X-ray jets in AGN are commonly observed in FRII and FRI radio-galaxies, but
rarely in BL Lacs, most probably due to their orientation close to the line of
sight and the ensuing foreshortening effects. Only three BL Lacs are known so
far to contain a kpc-scale X-ray jet. In this paper, we present the evidence
for the existence of a fourth extended X-ray jet in the classical
radio-selected source S5 2007+777, which for its hybrid FRI/II radio morphology
has been classified as a HYMOR (HYbrid MOrphology Radio source). Our Chandra
ACIS-S observations of this source revealed an X-ray counterpart to the
19"-long radio jet. Interestingly, the X-ray properties of the kpc-scale jet in
S5 2007+777 are very similar to those observed in FRII jets. First, the X-ray
morphology closely mirrors the radio one, with the X-rays being concentrated in
the discrete radio knots. Second, the X-ray continuum of the jet/brightest knot
is described by a very hard power law, with photon index Gamma_x~1, although
the uncertainties are large. Third, the optical upper limit from archival HST
data implies a concave radio-to-X-ray SED. If the X-ray emission is attributed
to IC/CMB with equipartition, strong beaming (delta=13) is required, implying a
very large scale (Mpc) jet. The beaming requirement can be somewhat relaxed
assuming a magnetic field lower than equipartition. Alternatively, synchrotron
emission from a second population of very high-energy electrons is viable.
Comparison to other HYMOR jets detected with Chandra is discussed, as well as
